Tools + Plugins I Use To Run My Business

Monday, November 7th 2016 Business

There is a lot of information out there on the web about how to run a business, and not a day goes by where I don’t see another article on another site telling you about the top 50 plugins you need for your WordPress site, or all of the investments you should make in subscriptions that will help your business run smoother. Every time I see one of these articles though I wonder two things:

Am I doing something wrong? Are these people insane?

I use 14 things to efficiently and effectively run my business, and that includes plugins. Realistically I could probably utilize one or two more things to make things a little easier on myself but overall my setup is pretty simple, and I like the fact that I don’t have to worry about $400+ in monthly bills just to keep everything afloat. I know it can be daunting seeing all of these freelancers, and ‘preneurs’ telling you how much money they have to spend a month in order to just run their business – so I wanted to show the smaller side of things, and how I run my business for under $100/mo.

Please Stop Listening to the Professionals

Monday, October 31st 2016 Business

This one is going to be quick and dirty ladies and gents, because all of this noise is getting on my nerves. The “noise” being everyone and their damn mothers telling me what to do. Telling you what to do.

You know what I’m seeing every day? On twitter? In Facebook groups?

Bloggers who are confused, who are overwhelmed – who don’t know what to do. This includes people who haven’t even started a blog yet, and are just researching into doing so. This is mind boggling to me considering that there are so many people out there claiming to want to help bloggers.

Q+A: To Spec or Not To Spec

Wednesday, October 28th 2015 Q + A

A few weeks ago I got an email from a friend, who as a new designer, wanted to know a bit about spec/comp work without actually asking about spec/comp work – because they didn’t know it was a thing. But it is, and it’s a big thing designers and developers have had to deal with way back since everyone likes to get things for as little as possible (ie. For-ev-er).

According to AIGA, spec work is considered:

Speculative or “spec” work: work done for free, in hopes of getting paid for it

In other words, you do the work and then the client decides after seeing it if they want to pay for it. This is an issue in a lot of fields, but espcially designers, developers and online creators. Hell there is a whole site deticated to it, and why it’s wrong. Their question though had to do with the one thing that absolutely should never even be mentioned alongside ‘free,’ or ‘spec work’.

Why I Don’t & Will Never Recommend Squarespace

Monday, October 26th 2015 Business, Thoughts

While there are a handful of reasons why I don’t generally think that Squarespace is the best option as website/blogging platform, the main issue I have with Squarespace is the same as I have with sites like Blogger, and far outweighs things like not having full control over your design. (Although, I think that’s a pretty big issue too, let’s be real.)

The simple fact of the matter is, with sites like Squarespace and Blogger, you don’t own your content. Which is why it blows my MIND to see so many businesses on Squarespace.

Now to be clear, if you’re a new blogger and you’re just getting your feet wet, great! Explore every possibility there is, make sure you find what’s right for you, and that blogging is something you’re going to stick with before you invest a ton of money into something. We all started out somewhere and there’s always possibility and room for growth to a self-hosted solution in the future.

For a business though? Come on, now.
