Why Buying Your Domain + Hosting From Different Companies Is Important

Wednesday, April 12th 2017 Business

In life, in general, it’s seen as productive to … condense. When we go grocery shopping most of us get the bulk of our items from one place, it’s generally cheaper and less stressful than going to 3-4 different stores for different things. Likewise, a lot of online business owners flock to things like Co-Schedule* and Buffer to send out our social media posts to all platforms instead of having to go to each site and send them out manually. It saves us time and makes life easier, therefore making a lot more sense than the alternatives.

So, in turn, it seems like it would make a whole lot of sense, when it comes to your website, to purchase your domain and hosting from the same place. One less company to deal with, one less login to remember, etc. However, when it comes to your domain and hosting, especially when you have a business, the exact opposite of the ‘condensing’ idea is true.

Introducing Ginny

Monday, April 10th 2017 Themes, WordPress Themes

So, I’ve been working on this theme for much longer than expected.

A few months ago I decided that I was going to teach myself how to use/build onto the WordPress Customizer. I had Ginny designed already, and since she was a pretty simple theme, I decided that I’d use her to test out working the customizer. I was able to sit down over a weekend, thanks to tutorials by Nose Graze and Build WP Yourself, and figure out how to make everything work. After working on coding the site and then setting up the customizer I realized I had been putting off work to work on it, and that I probably shouldn’t be. So I pushed it aside and then came back to it about a week ago.

Finalizing the theme went a little slower than expected because I kept forgetting things. It’s been awhile since I’ve coded something myself, and so I got to what I thought was “finished” and realized I hadn’t included comments. At all.

It took me a few more days but she is finally ready, and I am so happy with how she turned out.

Biggest + Best Business Lesson I’ve Learned So Far

Monday, November 28th 2016 Business

Out of all the things I see floating around about business, competition is the one thing I never get asked about – or see anyone talk about, but it’s a very important subject. Competition and the feelings it brings up can either push you harder in your business or dig your business into a hole. I get asked questions a lot and see a lot of questions in the Facebook groups I’m in. Things like what to have in your contracts, how to talk to clients, what to do if a client doesn’t like something, and many, many more.

When it comes down to the best business lesson I’ve learned, though, and can possibly teach, it’s about competition.

Why I Choose + Recommend WordPress

Monday, November 21st 2016 Business

I wrote a post quite awhile ago about why I don’t and will never recommend Squarespace and the whole thing came down to the fact that Squarespace prevents businesses from growing past a certain point and that their Terms of Service seems to protect them, and not so much (at all) their users.

I’ve been asked a lot since then that if I don’t recommend Squarespace, why do I recommend WordPress? What makes one better than the other? And in my honest opinion? A whole damn lot.
